Navaratri 2024: Story
A Brahmin lived in a village and was a great devotee of Devi Durga. He had a daughter named Sumitra. Every day, the Brahmin performed rituals and Yagya for Devi Durga, following all the rules. Sumitra, his daughter, would also participate in this worship daily. One day, Sumitra became busy playing and did not join the worship. Her father, angered by this, told her that he would marry her to a poor man. Sumitra accepted his words in sorrow. True to his promise, her father married her to a poor, harsh man. Sumitra, having no home, spent the night in the forest with great difficulty.
Seeing her plight, Devi Durga appeared before her and said, “Girl, I am pleased with you. Ask for anything.” Sumitra replied, “Mother, why are you pleased with me?” Devi Durga explained that in her previous life, she was the wife of a Bhil (tribal). Due to her devotion to the Goddess, she was born in a Brahmin family. Blessed by the Goddess, Sumitra asked, “What should I do to be free from poverty?” Durga answered, “You should worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga with full devotion and chant the nine names.”
Following these instructions, Sumitra performed the Navratri fast and was blessed with immense wealth and happiness.
